Downwind Foiling 2024 competition rules

Competition rules

Start-ups are exclusively with a single SUP Race paddle.

When boarding the boat, riders can choose between 2 planes, 1 mast and a board, in order to select the equipment best suited to the weather conditions.

Each participant is responsible for his or her own safety equipment. A leash and 50N/CE lifejacket must be worn, along with a phone in a waterproof pouch. The organizer may add a hand light or any other individual safety device he deems necessary.

Start line

Riders line up seated on their boards with their legs in the water.

The start signal is represented by the lowering of a flag placed in front of the start line or to one side. The raising of the flag announces the start within one minute.

Riders in the start area have 15′ to take off in a stabilized flight, after which time the race management may decide to take on board riders who have not taken off.

During the race

Once the start has been given, no material changes may be made until the finish line has been crossed (e.g. changing a broken paddle).

In the event of a race that threatens a complete ranking, the race committee may decide to send the rank boat.

The Rank Boat will be sent from the finish line to the start line to rank the riders in the order of their ascent (in case of weather changes: less wind or dangerous weather development, riders not flying).

Any rider who spends more than 15′ without flying may be placed on a safety boat at the discretion of the race officials.

Ranking will be based on the cumulative times of the 2 DownWind legs.
